List of Antidepressants: SSRIs, MAOIs, Tricyclics, Tetracylics and Others

COMING SOON!

If we have not covered one of the antidepressants listed below on this site in the past we will cover the list of side effects coming soon.  Meanwhile check out the list below and a a few of the warnings.

SSRIs or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

  • Citalopram (Celexa)
  • escitalopram oxalate (Lexapro)
  • paroxetine (Paxil)
  • fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • fluvoxamine maleate (Luvox)
  • sertraline (Zoloft)

MAOIs or Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors

  • isocarboxazid (Marplan)
  • moclobemide (Manerix)
  • phenelzine (Nardil)
  • tranylcypromine (Parnate)
  • selegiline transdermal system (EMSAM)

Serious and potentially fatal adverse reactions may occur with concurrent use of other antidepressants including SSRIs, nefazodone, trazodone; also carbamazepine, cyclobenzaprine, buspirone, and many others.

Also similar potentially fatal reactions can occur with recreational drugs MDMA (Ecstasy), the AIDS drug Ritonavir and food products containing tyramine such as cheese and beer.

Moclobemide is a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase type A, which in practice means that it is somewhat less problematic with dietary restrictions and drug interactions.

Tricyclics

  • amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep, Vanatrip)
  • clomipramine (Anafranil)
  • desipramine (Norpramin, Pertofrane)
  • dosulepin (dothiepin) (Prothiaden)
  • doxepin (Adapin, Sinequan)
  • imipramine (Tofranil)
  • nortriptyline (Pamelor)
  • protriptyline (Vivactil)
  • trimipramine (Surmontil)
  • lofepramine

Tricyclics can cause arrhythmias and EKG changes and are very lethal in overdose.

These medications should be used with extreme caution in the elderly.

Tetracyclics

  • maprotiline (Ludiomil)
  • amoxapine (Asendo)
  • mianserin
  • mirtazapine (Remeron)

Others

  • bupropion (Wellbutrin): Also used for smoking cessation (Zyban). Wellbutrin XL
  • duloxetine (Cymbalta): Newest antidepressant

  1. Ted Weaver Says:

I have COPD and use an Advair 250/50 Inhaler. Is it save to also use the antidepressant, Zoloft with it? I tried it along with a Zoloft prescription for 4 or 5 days a few months ago and got extremely nervous and my doctor told me to stop the Zoloft, but I do need something for depression. Many thanks for your advice. Any suggestions for an Rx for my for my depression?
