Bills seek disclosure of pharmaceutical companies’ payments to doctors

AUSTIN – Texas lawmakers may be ready to force pharmaceutical companies to disclose payments to doctors, which some fear have led to excess prescribing of high-cost, high-risk drugs.

Mirroring a national trend, two state lawmakers have filed bills to require drug manufacturers to report all payments to Texas health-care providers – including consulting fees and honoraria, gifts and travel perks. Read the rest of this entry »

Boston Legal: Season Finale, Final Episode

The final season of Boston Legal continually attacked Big Pharma.  Yes!  About time a show was bold enough to stand up to Big Pharma.  Perhaps since they were about to go off the air was the reason for the sudden bravery.  Either way, let’s face it, it was brave of ABC to make these strikes because television ads are filled with prescription ads.  If Big Pharma were to pull their ads ABC would stand to lose plenty of money.  They did it in such a way that they were routing for both sides but were able to slip in many digs.  They did as safe as they possibly could without asking for an outright attack on themselves.

The last episode had to do with Denny going to the Supreme Court requesting to have a clinic trial drug for Alzheimer’s Disease.  Opposing counsel is quoted as saying, “If they get to peddal promising, untested drugs, we know they’ll do it, drugs that engender false hope, higher profit margins if they get to skip the testing.  Investers will pump their money into snake oils that dress up well.  This is not a scrupulous industry, Your Honor.  They most certainly don’t deserve a pass on clinical trials and that is what will effectively happen if untested drugs are okayed by this court.”

Though we didn’t get to see the firm take down Big Pharma at the end we saw plenty of attacks that will definitely get viewers thinking Big Pharma is much like Big Tobacco.  Glad to see this coming to view on a national and international  level.

Drug Lobbyists Go After the Brains of Children

Big Pharma´s drug lobby machine (the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America) increased its financial arm-twisting of Congress by 25% in 2007 – in an effort to ward off competition and lock in bogus psychiatric medication sales to children.

Drug companies are struggling because their products don´t work for preventive health and they can´t make money just using them for appropriate uses. Their main trade group [PhRMA] spent $22 million in 2007 to buy favors from Congress.

Partly this money was spent trying to maintain a legal monopoly – such as blocking less expensive drug re-importation, preventing fair-price drug negotiations for Medicare, manipulating patent laws to extend drug profits, and ensuring direct to consumer ads continue.

However, most of the increase in spending was to get Congress to reauthorize the State Children´s Health Insurance Program, a program to get and keep low-income kids on mind altering drugs – a cash cow worth billions for Big Pharma. These drugs cause permanent adverse alterations in the developing nervous system of children. There is a reason every school-related mass murder involves shooters that have been on psych drugs.

I´m all in favor of needed health care for any child. However, psych drugs do not replace the responsibility of parents to provide a home and family, the quality of food fed to children, and learning skills about how to live. Solving this problem is easy – provide health care for children but don´t cover the sale of any psych medication. Immediately you would find that Big Pharma no longer cares about children´s health.

Conflict With Drug Makers Exposed by Senator Grassley

Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) just keeps uncovering all kinds of skeletons in the closets of influential people.

This time he has found that a popular National Public Radio (NPR) host of the health and science show, “The Infinite Mind,” has a conflict-of-interest with the very drug companies he talks about.

Psychiatrist, Dr. Frederick K. Goodwin, earned at least $1.3 million over the last five years, lecturing for drug makers and keeping that relationship secret.   Read the rest of this entry »

FDA and Big Pharma (PhRMA) in Bed Together!

Many of you are very familiar with Big Pharma.  Others are not.  So excue the definition if you already know this.

Big Pharma is really the drug industry.  But there is actually a trade assocation, if you wish, entitled, “PhRMA” (The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America).  They will tell you that their members invested over $44.5 billion in 2007 in discovering and developing new medicines.  What they won’t tell you is that they are really a lobbying firm pushing made up diagnosis and their drugs as a cure.  They cure nothing.  They invest billions to sell trillions and then line their pockets individually with millions.  These drugs come with a host of side effects that put individuals in such a drugged state that half the time they don’t even notice all the side effects.  I am talking about thei psychotropic drugs; their antiepressants, antipsychotics, their stimulants (psychostimulants), their hypnotics, their tranquilizers and sleeping pills.
