St John’s Wort Plant as Effective as Prozac for Treating Depression, say Scientists

My regular readers know I think all Prozac should be destroyed.  The article below states that St. John’s Wort is just as effective as Prozac, I would like to change it to a safer treatment for depression, as Prozac is far from safe.

“It has long been a happy alternative for those reluctant to pop pills for depression.

But the herbal extract St John’s Wort now has more than just cheerful converts to testify to its mood-lifting powers.

In what is billed as the most thorough study of the plant, scientists have found it is just as effective as Prozac at treating depression. Read the rest of this entry »

Uses of Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola rosea may be effective for improving mood and alleviating depression. Pilot studies on human subjects showed that it improves physical and mental performance, reduces fatigue, and minimizes high-altitude sickness.

Rhodiola is included among a class of plant derivatives called adaptogens which differ from chemical stimulants, such as nicotine, and do not have the same physiological effects.

In Russia and Scandinavia, Rhodiola rosea, also known as golden root, has been used for centuries to cope with the cold Siberian climate and stressful life. Such effects were provided evidence in laboratory models of stress using the nematode, C. elegans, and in rats in which Rhodiola effectively prevented stress-induced changes in appetite, physical activity, weight gain and the estrus cycle. ADD, ADHD or N.D.D. (Nutritional Deficit Disorder)?

I was watching a television program this morning and there was a specialist who stated that if you think your child has ADD, perhaps they really have N.D.D.  He says it is his own term which stands for Nutritional Deficit Disorder.

There were three ingredients he mentioned to watch out for on all food labels that would help your child’s health.  Read the rest of this entry »

Sleeping Pills – FDA Warning!

With all the harmful side effects of sleeping pills such as Zolpidem (Ambien, classed as an anti-psychotic drug), Eszopiclone (Lunesta) and Zaleplon (Sonata and Starnoc) why are people still taking these drugs?  They are all Hypnotic classed medications and can be dangerous.

“March 14, 2007: The FDA announced that all sleeping pills (also known as “sedative-hypnotic products”), including Ambien and Lunesta, can cause the dangerous side effect of “sleep-driving,” which is driving while not fully awake and having no memory of doing so, and may also cause life-threatening allergic reactions. The FDA told manufacturers to write letters to doctors to notify them of the new warnings, and all prescription sleeping pills will now come with special brochures called “Medication Guides” that spell out the risks for patients in easy-to-understand language.”

Warning: Never stop taking these drugs cold turkey.   To avoid severe side effects they must be cut back a tiny bit at a time over several months.  Consult your physician.

Instead of requesting a sleeping pill from a doctor, why not first try some of the following suggestions: Read the rest of this entry »

What is Ecotherapy?

Nature is around all of us. When was the last time you got out of your cubicle, office, store, home, whatever to really enjoy it? Most of us love to go to the beach, take walks in the park, vacation in the country, go camping, whatever it is you love in the great outdoors, but do not do it.

Ecotherapy is a way to improve your mental health by being active outdoors, in a green environment.

According to research published last year by Mind, ecotherapy should become a recognized treatment for people with mental health problems. Their report, “Ecotherapy: the green agenda for mental health”, is the first study to look at the benefits of “green exercise” and how it effects depression. (Mind is the National Association for Mental Health, the leading non-profit in England and Wales devoted to mental health.) Read the rest of this entry »

Alternatives to Chantix (Varenicline) Dangerous Smoking Cessation Drug

Varenicline (trade name Chantix in the USA and Champix in Europe and other countries, marketed by Pfizer, is a prescription medication used to treat smoking addiction, by blocking the release of dopamine from nicotine receptors in the brain, just as antipsychotic drugs block dopamine.

The pill was linked to more than 3,000 reports of serious side effects per a Bloomberg report.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported in February that at least 39 people committed suicide while on Chantix. The FDA initially had cut the 10 month waiting period short by 4 months and approved the drug ahead of schedule. Read the rest of this entry »
